Stories, narrative, and representation are central to the understanding of the workings of medicine and healthcare. Both the experiences of service users and the very nature of health practice are narratives that have significant influence over the public conception of health provision; yet often the ways in which these representations work are unseen and misunderstood. This seminar will offer a set of examples of how such narratives work and their value in the delivery of healthcare.

This seminar will be composed of two sessions: ‘The Work of Narrative’ and ‘The Uses of Narrative: Stories of Social Engagement’. These sessions will concentrate on distinct areas: first, the ways in which narratives of medicine and health function in the day-to-day world of everyday health, in areas such as assessment, diagnosis, treatment and user experience; and second, the engaged nature of these narratives as they work in the world of healthcare. The sessions will involve looking at text (memoir, DSM-IV) and project case studies.

After you have attended this seminar you will be able to:

– better understand the workings and value of narrative in healthcare situations
– apply this understanding to your work and practice
– devise practical narrative-based initiatives in healthcare situations

This seminar is presented in partnership with the University of Leeds and Arts and Minds Network. To book and for more information please click here.
