Synopsis:
The last decade has seen a meteoric rise in online social networking, on-demand entertainment, and the capacity to access these things on smart mobile devices that seem to be everywhere. While most adults have either exuberantly or reluctantly caught on, the younger generation of “digital natives” have grown up saturated in a soup of online relating and on-demand entertainment. Whatever your perspective on these things, there is no doubt that these technological developments have been deeply impacting how we perceive ourselves, and how we manage relationships.

Psychotherapist and cultural theorist Dr Aaron Balick, draws on his experiences as a clinician, a BBC agony uncle (online), resident psychotherapist on BBC Radio 1, and a social media consultant to offer some answers. In an entertaining talk and presentation, Aaron will uncover the personal and cultural meanings of our new media using psychological models to understand real world problems. No prior knowledge of psychology is required to attend this lecture.

Lecturer – Dr Aaron Balick:
Aaron Balick, PhD, is a UKCP registered psychotherapist, supervisor, and academic working in London. His research interest is in the application of psychoanalysis to cultural artefacts, particularly technology, social networking, and the media: an interest which has culminated in his book The Psychodynamics of Social Networking: connected-up instantaneous culture and the self. As a strong believer in the democratisation and dissemination of psychotherapeutic ideas to the public, and particularly young people, Aaron is a regular mental health contributor to BBC Radio 1 and other media outlets, as well as being the author of the self-help book for children, Keep your Cool: how to deal with life’s worries and stress.

Chair – Professor Brendan Stone:
